Teak is a tropical hardwood indigenous to "India, Myanmar, Lao PDR (People's Democratic Republic) and Thailand," according to FAO.org. Teak is a genus in the Verbenaceae, or verbena, family. Teak's natural oils help protect it from the sun and drastic weather conditions. As a result, teak often is used to make furniture that can remain outdoors year-round. Teak is resistant to such pests as termites. Teak wood furniture care is simple and easy.

Teak trees are grown in an environment that is hot, wet and humid. This makes teak durable outdoor furniture that can weather similar conditions. The finest teak wood comes from trees that have grown slowly in natural forests; this makes for the most durable type of teak wood. Teak from very young trees is more likely to split or discolor.
